Over the years, many people have come to believe that applying color is as simple as choosing the right shade from a tube and applying it with a brush. All that was needed to achieve color was to know how to apply a ready-to-use color cream. But the colorist's craft is much more than that, and goes far beyond choosing a tube of color. The basics of the colorist's trade are based on colorimetry and chemistry, to skilfully compose the right formula. Like a chef-chemist, the hairdresser-colorist mixes, to the nearest gram, several powders or creams according to the desired result and the structure of the hair to be colored. He also doses the volume of oxidant needed to obtain the right result. He creates highlights, tones and gradations, adds shine and creates warm or cool tones according to each individual's personality. It's a profession that can't be invented, but can be learned over a lifetime. Christophe-Nicolas Biot is in a good position to know this, when he says that "a world without color is a world of infinite sadness". The colorist's craft is one that is lived, created and constantly evolving. That's why he created the Labo des couleurs, to enhance the value of the expert's word, to magnify this profession and highlight the knowledge of a good colorist.
